Is there actually such a thing as a gaming hard drive ? Or is this just a marketing gimmick ?

After reading this page you will be able to make an informed decision about what hard drive is the best for you.

WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR TO FIND THE BEST GAMING HARD DRIVE ?

The important factors to consider for the average gamers are reliability, loading speed and capacity.

HOW DO YOU MEASURE A HARD DRIVE RELIABILITY ?

Unfortunately, there is no way to know how long a hard drive will work, it might die in a year or in ten.
This is why it’s important to consider the warranty when you purchase. The typical warranty offered on a hard drive is between 2 to 5 years.

Both Western Digital and Seagate have a good reputation on exchanging hard drives quickly.

However the warranty will help you up to a certain extent, the warranty will replace the drive but does not include getting your data back.

Data recovery prices has been one of the biggest complain over the years, Seagate charges up to 600$ to recover the data, this is why we recommend you always use a cloud data backup service for important documents or memories you have stored on your computer. We personally recommend Dropbox.

HOW DO YOU KNOW THE LOADING SPEED OF A HARD DRIVE ?

On a regular hard drive, you can measure the speed of the drive with the RPM.

RPM stands for Revolutions Per Minute, inside your hard drive, there is a platter, that spins constantly, the faster it rotates the faster the electromagnetic head can write / read / erase on it.

computer hdd hard driveIn November 2011, Seagate introduced the SSHD as we know them today, also called Solid State Hybrid Technology, this new technology merges a regular Hard drive and an SSD, this gives users the speed of the Solid State Hard Drive and the Storage of a regular HDD.

Most SSHD today have about 8GB to 16GB of NAND Flash Memory Storage, this gives you enough to install your Operating-system and a few additional software that’s might be hard drive intensive, games are one of them.

The most important thing to consider when buying an SSHD is the Read / Write speed of the NAND Flash Memory, it is not always available in the specifications but make sure you take a look at it if you can.

WHAT IS THE CAPACITY OF THE HARD DRIVE ?

Remember when we talked about the platter ? That platter can store a certain amount of data, it is all decided by the hard drive manufacturer.

Hard drive’s capacities today range from 320GB to 10TB, we would recommend you purchase a minimum of 1TB as the price difference between those and the lower models do not justify the cost.

The cost of a hard drive is often quoted as $ per Gigabytes or $ per Terabytes on online communities, however, finding the lowest $/Gigabytes does not mean it is a great deal.

ARE THERE ANY OTHER SPECIFICATIONS TO LOOK AT ?

The cache is where the hard drive stores the information between being read on the platter and being actually processed by the CPU.

It’s a factor you can consider, the more you have the better, but it’s been proven that it does not directly affect the performance of the hard drive.

The data transfer rate is the performance indication at which the data is transferred in READ or WRITE format.

Most hard drives claim a 6Gbit/s speed rate, however, you will never reach that transfer speed. The speed listed is the maximum the interface you plug it in, in this case SATA-3, can support.

The average Read/Write Speed of a 7200 RPM drive is 130-150MB/s. So do not consider this specification when selecting a hard drive.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A 2.5 INCH AND A 3.5 INCH HARD DRIVE ?difference between a 3.5inch drive and 2.5inch

There are 2 common sizes of modern hard drives, 3.5 inch hard drives are mainly for desktop computers

2.5 inches drives are normally for Laptops, but can also be used with a Mounting Bracket in desktop cases.

WHAT BRAND SHOULD I GET FOR WHEN LOOKING FOR A HARD DRIVE?

The hard drive industry currently only has 3 manufacturers, Western Digital, Seagate and Toshiba.

You might see other brands available like Hitachi (HGST), Samsung or Maxtor but they are all owned by one of the 3 companies above.

HOW CAN I CHOOSE THE RIGHT DRIVE FOR WHAT I NEED?

In 2015, Western Digital has created color codes for their internal hard drives. We included below a small list of their specifications, for a gamer, I would recommend you choose
a Western Digital Black hard drive as they were created for us gamers !

BLUEs are for Standard users.
BLACKs are the fastest and are optimized for Games / Performance.
GREENs are for Mass Storage
REDs are designed for NAS, also known are storage servers.

Best Desktop Hard Drive under 100$

100$ is a respectable amount for a desktop or laptop hard drive, you should be able to purchase a drive that has storage from 500GB to 4TB. Remember you should use those drives to store data or your games. If you are looking for speed we recommend you look for an SSHD or an SSD.
